DG's Third Blog

On Monday 29th of August Winnie and I made our way to Broughty Ferry and were royally welcomed outside the Woodlands Hotel by President John Mee along with a local reporter to take pictures for the Dundee Courier of the presentation of books from the Club to Winnie's book project. After a splendid meal I spoke to the Club, including some visitors from other Clubs. At the point when the normal Club raffle was to take place, President John asked Winnie to pick the winner, saying his number was 408, lo and behold the winning ticket was indeed 408, many cries of 'fix' were heard. We left for our overnight stay in Glenrothes, once again with a load of wonderful books for CHAS.

Next day on the 30th of August we visited the Rotary Club of Claverhouse to be welcomed by the President,  Brian Cairns, at the Queens Hotel in Dundee. We had a splendid meal with the Club members and both Winnie and I enjoyed the fellowship. The Club has no lady Rotarians, as yet, but Brian explained that they were trying to recruit some new members, including ladies.

Later that day we travelled from Glenrothes to the Howe of Fife Club to meet up with many old friends. The Club meets in the Village Inn at Pitlessie, near Cupar. President Ann Bain and a large turn out of members and guests welcomed us to the evening. It almost felt like a District meeting with so many current and past District officers being present, including DGE Robin as well as Past District Governor David Rankin, who is now the Secretary at the Club. It was a very special meeting for one of the Club members, Dr John Kerr. The Club had decided to honour John by presenting him with a Paul Harris Fellowship. I was delighted and honoured to perform the task of installing John as a Fellow. His work with Shelter Box has been magnificent and the PHF well deserved.

On Wednesday the 31st of August we had another trip to the seaside, to visit the Rotary Club of Carnoustie. Someone asked at a club if we were having any holidays this year, I replied " Yes indeed, but only day trips to the seaside", it was a moment before the penny dropped. The Club meets in the Station Hotel where we were greeted by the Club members and President Steele Carnegie. Winnie sat among the 'boys' and was looked after by a doctor, Hamish by name, whom she said was a wonderful host. After the usual very nice meal we made our way to Kirkcaldy to stay overnight with Ann and Harry Mitchell.

Must have been a good joke Steele - what was it?
